Opening image: a black and white close-up of a screaming woman. What is happening and, above all, what the cause is remains hidden for the time being. 'The Lodger' was the first film in which Hitchcock introduced a style and themes that would become his trademark. Characters without names, claustrophobic lighting, threatening camera angles. Blonde women watch out, the Avenger is after you! A thrilling format. 73 years later, Joby Talbot wrote a soundtrack for it. By adding music he wants to restore the impact the film had back then. Themes are continually repeated, sometimes linked to characters but more often to ideas. Talbot consciously chose to leave some moments in the film silent. The distinctive images make music superfluous and we hear the victims' screaming in our minds.
