1h Sound and image merge in Luc Brewaeys' The Riddle of the Sphinx
An architect who unites history and modernity. A composer who distils sound into its essence. A documentary that traverses time and space. The Riddle of the Sphinx is more than music -– it is a quest for harmony, between the old and the new, between image and sound. In this year commemorating Brewaeys, this work, composed in 1983, is a must. Luc Brewaeys is one of Belgium’s most visionary composers, and wrote this music for a documentary by director Jef Cornelis about the Liège architect Charles Vandenhove. This work marked his initial steps into spectral music.
Now, this piece comes to life, performed by the adventurous musicians of HERMESensemble. Not a classic film screening. Not a traditional concert. But an exhilarating fusion of image and sound. Allow yourself to be swept away by Brewaeys’ layered music, which - much like Vandenhove’s architecture - builds bridges between tradition and innovation.
