Het Collectief presents a broad selection from the repertoire of the Second Viennese School in a three-part cycle. During the first concert we introduce you to a couple of high points from the instrumental oeuvre by the three protagonists, Schoenberg, Berg and Weber.
'Quartet' is Webern's most characteristic chamber music piece. A tightly serial fabric forms the fundament for elegant voice leading, a sensual mix of sound colours and a musical discourse that distils down to its essence. You could call it music for the sake of music.
As a fervent literature fan, Alban Berg mainly composed songs. His dramatic talent became apparent in two milestones of modern opera: 'Wozzeck' and 'Lulu'. You can also hear this pronounced lyrical style in the 'Adagio aus dem Kammerkonzert'.
The 'Kammersymphonie' holds a key position in Schoenberg's oeuvre. Despite the hyper-romantic emotional baggage, this work predicts an unstoppable modernist revolution: the symphonic form is condensed into a single movement, the orchestra only consists of 15 solo voices, and quartal chords are integrated into the tonal system. Het Collectief plays Anton Webern's 1922 quintet version.
