In around 1900, cultural life balanced between nostalgia for 19th-century Romanticism and an emerging modernity. Wagner and Debussy took tonality right to its limits, after which Arnold Schönberg and Alban Berg blew it up entirely. With his disciples, Schönberg set up the ‘Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen’. This concert society consciously distanced itself from the official, conservative musical life and recognised the revolutionary works of its time. In his ‘Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune’, Debussy unleashed a new era of form and colour use. Wagner sought out new harmonic horizons. In the orchestral lieder of Schönberg and Alban Berg, a new musical order rose from the ashes of the old Romantic ruins.
