We are inclined to think that 4 + 4 = 8. But this sum doesn't tally when the four singers of the Hilliard Ensemble and the four string players of the Arditti quartet join forces. The Hilliard Ensemble and Arditti Quartet enjoy a fantastic reputation worldwide. They are equally at home in both the old and new repertoire. So this concert will successfully combine music by Renaissance composers such as Guillaume de Machaut, William Cornyshe and Giles Farnaby with works by Pascal Dusapin and James Clarke. Dusapin's style can be described at best as volatile. Musically, his compositional style has its roots in Xenakis, and when one delves even deeper, one detects Varèse. But this doesn't exclude the clear influences of jazz that can be heard in his music. The evening closes with a new work for string quartet and vocal ensemble by James Clarke. Clarke is a composer that is not led by theory but prefers to compose using sound experiments and association. Come and sample this unique combination of voices and strings.
