8h A unique life translates well into distinctive art, and Sofia Goebajdoelina is a living, breathing example of this. Born in a Soviet Union that preached atheism, she already discovered spiritual dimensions in the work of her favourite composers at a young age. The sound of the transcendental would also go on to rule her own practice, but this left the authorities unimpressed. Goebajdoelina was blacklisted in 1979, but there is little evidence of rancour. “I didn’t earn much, but I could write whatever I wanted without compromises.” And her oeuvre is nothing if not uncompromising. She implements techniques from the European and American avant-garde in a way that is uniquely her own. Abstract mystical ideas are transformed into concrete sounds. Unusual line-ups result in unusual timbres (what do you think of percussion, bayan and four saxophones in ‘Erwartung’, for example). And yet Goebajdoelina’s work is anything but bombastic. She almost always shies away from grand gestures: she appears to effortlessly use minimal resources to maximum effect. Allow yourself to be transported into a deeply personal oeuvre with universal appeal.
