George Crumb and Messiaen make the spring audible and tangible in music.
The hr-Sinfonieorchester is at the top of the list of leading orchestras on which Germany prides itself. The musicians from Frankfurt surprise us with their appealing programmes, in which they sometimes take a detour along less well-trodden paths. The American star conductor Brad Lubman shows them the way. George Crumb’s A Haunted Landscape sounds exactly like the title suggests: an atmospheric orchestral landscape with a hint of mystery. With Réveil des oiseaux Messiaen wrote his first orchestral work dedicated to birdsong. The sound of spring made audible and tangible in music.
