I SOLISTI and Asko|Schönberg honour Pierre Boulez with Repons and its antithesis Tenney.
On 26 March 2025, Pierre Boulez would have celebrated his hundredth birthday. Reason enough to commemorate the French godfather of modernism with a special joining of forces. The Flemish I SOLISTI and the Dutch Asko | Schönberg meet under the direction of Bas Wiegers for a performance of Boulez’s masterpiece Répons. The point of view, the relationship between question and answer, and thus the questioning of seemingly self-evident structures was the common thread in much of Boulez's work. In Répons he positioned the listeners in a circle between the ensemble and the six soloists. At DE SINGEL they combine Répons with In a large, open space by the American James Tenney. Where Boulez had set his sights on control and organisation, Tenney was one of the pioneers of coincidence as a guiding motif. I SOLISTI and Asko | Schönberg invite you to seek out the similarities between these two milestones of 20th century music.
