The 'Messiah' turned out to be a bull's-eye from its very first performance. It was performed no less than 56 times during Handel's lifetime, but only 12 times in religious buildings: Handel created versions for different performance circumstances. The 'Messiah' remained a successful work after Handel's death too. Performances with huge casts were organised, and this tradition has since been restored. Will you come and join in?
