An evening of comfort, joy, and choral sound
At the heart of this programme lies the human voice - as messenger, comforter, and celebrant of life. Bach's Trauerode is one of his most moving cantatas, with an expressive power reminiscent of the St Matthew Passion. The Brussels-based Joseph H. Fiocco’s Homo Quidam introduces sparkling Baroque splendour, while Handel glorifies the music itself in his Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day.
The Belgian Baroque ensemble Il Gardellino, a stalwart in the world of Baroque for over twenty years, and the Purcell Choir, conducted by Bart Van Reyn, breathe life into these works with a stellar cast of soloists who sing as if they are momentarily suspending time. Soprano Rachel Redmond, described by The Times as an ‘impressive silken soprano’, tenor Guy Cutting, countertenor Péter Bárány, and baritone Ákos Borka invite you into a musical realm in which voices articulate the language of the inexpressible. Music that, centuries later, still goes straight to the heart.
