While performances in the 18th century could be shaky and under-rehearsed, Insula orchestra are anything but. Their playing is brisk, resolute – and completely contemporary. Bachtrack
In A German Requiem, Johannes Brahms replaced Latin with German, thereby adding an unusually personal dimension to the traditional requiem mass. Composed after the death of his mother, the music is both comforting and grandiose, and it centres on the transience of life and solace for those left behind. The work is infused with heartfelt human emotions, and offers a unique insight into the soul of one of the greatest composers in Western musical history. Laurence Equilbey, the Paris-based Insula orchestra and accentus present this monumental work from a deeply human perspective. The music sounds like a discussion between voice and heart, in which moments of hushed beauty and majestic power come together. Their fresh interpretation of Brahms’ requiem is touching and moving, and brings the work to life again in all its emotional depth.
