With its historical rigour, the Insula Orchestra of conductor Laurence Equilbey has been setting the bar high for period orchestras for more than a decade. Historic instruments, alternative tuning, even varying concert line-ups: the French musical director leaves nothing to chance and carefully researches every aspect of the performance. This means that you can even explore a repertoire icon like Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in a completely new way. The epic build-up, which shifted the boundaries of the symphonic form. The mischievous Janissary music, which Beethoven, just like Mozart, scattered abundantly across his work. The magnificent final part, famous as the anthem for the European Union. It is as though the shadow of this pillar is suddenly falling a little differently. In the finale, the established musical 'brüder' of the accentus choir – also founded by Equilbey – support the authentic gut strings, calfskin timpani and boxwood clarinets. An unmissable experience, whether this is the very first time you’ve heard Beethoven's Ninth, or the hundredth.
