The pianist Irwin Gage is an absolute authority on the subject of the lieder genre. As an accompanist, he has worked with many great lieder performers for many years, amongst them Elly Ameling, Brigitte Fassbaender and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He has a particular fondness for the lieder oeuvre of Brahms and the Second Viennese School. He was able to study the work of Schoenberg and his followers at the source, with Alban Berg's wife Helene and with Friedrich Cerha in Vienna in the sixties. As a teacher of lieder interpretation at the Musikhochschulen of Zürich and Saarbrücken and in master classes all over the world, Irwin Gage passes on his knowledge and experience to the latest generation of lieder performers. In the process, he emphasises the importance of establishing a long-term partnership, which he considers to be an absolute requirement for a good lieder duo. We saw Irwin Gage teaching a master class at the Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival in 2004. The poignant interpretation of Brahms lieder by the duo Caroline Melzer and Anette Fischer-Lichdi, who were among the participants, made an unforgettable impression. At the request of deSingel, Irwin Gage will prepare the duo to give a full evening's lieder recital that makes the link between the songs of Schubert, Brahms and Schoenberg. Following this concert, Irwin Gage will conduct lieder duo master classes that are open to the public free of charge.
