introduction Irwin Gage and Lucrèce Maeckelbergh . 7.15pm . Blue Bar
In our hunt for exceptional young talent in the field of Lieder, we took advice from the great pianist Irwin Gage. Although he has withdrawn from concert life, he is still very active as a teacher and as a jury member in a number of international competitions. He is therefore best placed to spot talent and let us in on it. At the same time, Gage is the driving force behind the new 'Schubert Wettbewerb' for song duos in Dortmund, which was organised for the first time in 2009. Convincing winners from this first edition were the Polish baritone Tomasz Wija and the Portuguese pianist David Santos. There must of course be some Schubert in their debut recital in our music studio. Schubert was a master at evoking everything from lightly babbling brooks, through rolling waves, to turbulent seas. We will also hear some 'Wasserlieder' by Schumann and Brahms. From Wolf's 'Goethe-Lieder', Wija and Santos have selected the captivating songs from the mad harpist in 'Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre'. To end, we step into the shoes of Vaughan-Williams' 'Vagabond', who finds memories of his lost youth and love in nature.
In the same week, Irwin Gage imparts his inexhaustible knowledge to students in public master-classes, which you are most welcome to attend.
