Attendees of previous concerts are sure to be eagerly awaiting the final part of Beethoven’s complete violin sonatas with Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov. Superlatives fail to describe their elegant and characterful performances. Both Faust and Melnikov pick up the advantages of the historically informed performance practice. This is apparent from their highly refined approach to articulations, vibrato and non-vibrato. They play with a staggering technique, but also with a great freedom, imagination and above all, courage. The rapid sections whirl past, packed with humour and thrilling musical inventions. In the slow parts, there is a reach stream of lyricism, but this is never overly-perfumed or cloyingly sentimental. And thus each sonata is given a highly unique, compelling identity.
