It is hard to believe, but around the turn of the century the German newspapers labelled Beethoven’s music, in particular the Sonatas for piano and violin, opus 12, as excessive, far-fetched, complicated and even deviant. Innovators always come up against reactionary reviews and Beethoven was no exception. In spite of this, these early sonatas are especially striking with their sophisticated themes, rich variety and virile interplay. The well-known ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ emphasises Beethoven’s skill at excelling in an original, playful but certainly not gratuitous way. In the ‘Andante con variazioni’ he effortlessly conjures up a simple motif in order to move from light-footed and romantic to virtuoso passages with dextrous ornamentation. And who better to illustrate this than Beethoven specialists and ‘compagnons de route’ Alexander Melnikov and Isabelle Faust?
