Pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason shines in her DE SINGEL solo debut
Jeneba Kanneh-Mason makes her solo debut at DE SINGEL, yet her name is anything but unfamiliar. Her brother Sheku and sister Isata have graced this stage before, and will return on 3 October with the Chineke! Orchestra. As one of the youngest scions of this renowned British musical family, Jeneba steps forward solo with a programme in which the familiar sounds of Chopin and Debussy resonate alongside long-overlooked voices. Her first solo album, Fantasy, underlines this versatility and her personal choice of repertoire that is both canonical and forgotten.
In Fantasie Nègre by Florence Price, the classical and Afro-American traditions meld into a captivating and vibrant whole. Kanneh-Mason is palpably at home in her music: at the BBC Proms 2021, the young pianist made her debut with the same Chineke! Orchestra in a celebrated performance of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement. And then there is Summerland by William Grant Still - a moment of pure tranquillity, like a reverie on a world that briefly escapes time.
