Jerusalem Quartet

Youthful enthusiasm is one of the Jerusalem Quartet's greatest assets. Their sublime sensitivity for the subtlest dynamic shading puts you on the edge of your seat. Fellow countryman, pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim has been a loyal fan for years, lending the famous 'Sergio Peresson' cello, which belonged to his late wife Jacqueline du Pré, to the cellist Kyril Zlotnikov. The qualities of the cello are really shown off in Mozart's String Quartet in D, KV575. Although the public know this piece as the 'Prussian Quartet', sometimes it is also labelled as the 'cello quartet' with the cello taking a role that is virtually solo. The Jewish composer Mark Kopytman also writes virtuoso cello parts. It comes as no surprise then that Kopytman's music is inspired by Jewish, Eastern-European folk music, with its typically slow, melancholic melodies. There is no worthier substitute for the human voice than the cello!
