In this programme, the Jerusalem Quartet presents an anthology of works that lie close to their own hearts. The opus 76 is the final series of string quartets that Joseph Haydn served up to his noble clients. The Father of the String Quartet culminates here in style that is perfectly polished, but still adventurous. Only Mozart can match this perfection. At the age of eighteen, he wrote his Second Piano Sonata: touchingly transparent and light as a feather. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, an exuberant piece devoid of any irony, has a similar sound. This spirited five-part tour de force is brimming with virtuosity. ‘Gefundenes Fressen’ for the pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja, who never shies away from such a challenge.
