Do you want to share an adventure with the legendary Catalan gamba and rebab player Jordi Savall? With his Hesperion XXI ensemble, his Le Concert des Nations orchestra and the choir La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Savall has made countless journeys to the most remote regions of early music. In this predominantly Sephardic programme, he sails the Mediterranean and Black Seas with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. In a medley of twenty pieces, they follow the route of thousands of refugees and fortune-seekers who set sail for new lands in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. On the way they stop off in places full of the wonderful blended music of Spaniards, Moors, Jews, Greeks, Turks, Persians, Armenians, Italians and Balkan peoples. They sing a song or play the ud, santur or floguera. The plaintive playing of Savall and his Mediterranean companions has an infectious effect on the musicians of the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble: they join in almost imperceptibly and give the music a range of constantly varying tones. Together they celebrate the wandering journey, as players without a fixed abode, as musical gypsies. Because the story of our drifting fellow humans is still far from over.
