introduction with Jörg Widmann . 7.15pm . Bar De Kunsthaven
Jörg Widmann (1973) is one of the most performed and fascinating composers of our time and we get off to a flying start with his Fantasy for Solo Clarinet. Anyone who wishes to understand this composer should first hear the clarinettist perform his work. The technical virtuosity and enchanting richness of sound that characterise his playing are also to be found in his compositions. Widmann's music is emotionally charged, full of sudden changes of tone and very communicative. He ardently searches out scores that present extremes. Ranging from almost noiseless sounds that come out of nowhere to subtle colour variations and percussive effects, moving on to quasi-electronic noise. Widmann's explorations into the new and unknown are always deeply rooted in tradition. Therefore, as a listener you can always pick out recognizable points of reference.
Some of our best musicians will be performing Widmann's Piano Trio. The composer provides an explanation of his work in an inspired and accessible way. A unique encounter with a captivating individual! And the perfect initiation into the marvellous world of contemporary music.
