Joyce DiDonato sings her favourite things: Monteverdi, Dowland, Handel and Hasse
When Joyce DiDonato sings, the notes disappear. Accompanied by the Italian baroque orchestra Il Pomo d'Oro, in this concert the American mezzo-soprano gives shape to the earthquake that turned the genre of music drama on its head in around 1700. The opera seria replaced the dramma per musica of the 17th century. What remained were intensity and stunning melodies. From the emotional theatre of Monteverdi, to the intimacy of Dowland, to the grand passions of Handel or Hasse. There is a reason why Joyce DiDonato describes this music as her "favourite things". With her self-assured appearance and glowing voice, there is no doubt that this will be an unmissable concert. As the opening for this new season, this is sure to make its mark.
