The performance Black Corporeal is part of a continuing series of works by the young poet, visual artist and film-maker Julianknxx (Julian Knox). These are centred around the relationship between materiality and the Black psyche. In our society, the right of Black bodies to exist is still threatened on a daily basis by the after-effects of historic oppression and social prejudices. During a residency in Antwerp, Julianknxx, who was born in Sierra Leone, has a conversation with members of the Black diaspora in the city on the Scheldt. He documents their personal experiences of life in the city, their happiness and their exhaustion. How can we coexist today? This material will culminate in a poetic performance with a live choir. On the cutting edge between visual art and literature, time and time again in his work Julianknxx explores themes such as loss, heritage and connectedness. Based on his personal history, he undermines dominant visions of African art and culture and creates new, collective stories.
