A leading pre-professional orchestra, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie works exclusively with the cream of the country's music academies. It is directed, moreover, by the very best of conductors: for this particular concert, Thomas Søndergård. No wonder then that, in its nearly forty years' existence, the Junge Deutsche has produced renowned groups of musicians, including the Ensemble Modern, for whom new music has always been of great importance. In this concert, the orchestra plays Jörg Widmanns 'Zweites Labyrinth' (2006). Five groups of instruments are arranged spatially in such a way that the audience appears to find itself in a labyrinth of sound planes, within which melodic lines act as leitmotifs. An unforgettable sound experience.
A Romantic pendant to the programme is Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto, with the star violinist Veronika Eberle as soloist. Even though this work was written in the twentieth century, it has acquired a firm place in the Romantic repertoire, as indeed has the Fourth Symphony of Tchaikovsky. With its unbridled emotion, this work reflects the story of Tchaikovsky's brief and dramatic marriage to his former pupil Antonina Milyukova.
