Did you know that the German baritone Matthias Goerne - at the time budding, now famous - gave one of his first recitals abroad at deSingel in 1998? Since then, his career has soared, with appearances at the most renowned opera houses and at the biggest music festivals. This concert with the leading Swiss ensemble, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, represents a unique opportunity for you to hear his versatile baritone voice and profound interpretations live once again.
Goerne has selected a few of the finest religious bass arias by Bach and Graupner. Bach wrote about two hundred and ninety-five cantatas. If that already seems a lot, think of the output of Christoph Graupner, who had some thousand four hundred and eighteen religious cantatas to his name. The Christmas cantata 'Wie wunderbar ist Gottes Güte' is a fine example of his compositional skill.
Bach wrote the stunning cantata 'Ich habe genug' in 1727 in Leipzig for the Feast of the Purification. Both this and 'Der Friede sei mit dir' sketch the yearning for approaching death and the eternal life beyond.
