The Labèque sisters complete Philip Glass' Cocteau trilogy with intense piano playing.
In 2021, Katia and Marielle Labèque created the instrumental suites for two pianos from Philip Glass' opera Les Enfants Terribles, which is based on the film version of the eponymous novel by Jean Cocteau. The success of the record made the pianists even more enthusiastic about asking Philip Glass and his music director Michael Riesman to complete the trilogy by tackling the two remaining operas from the Cocteau Trilogy in the same way: Orphée and La Belle et la Bête. This was a natural step for these two ‘enfants terribles’ of the piano, as performers who like to draw inspiration from the minimal music catalogue. To enhance the audience's listening experience at every opera and create an intimate atmosphere, director Cyril Teste and set designer Nina Chalot placed a chandelier above the pianists. The object offers endless possibilities in terms of staging and dramaturgy to illuminate the listeners during the performance of the three suites.
