The Labèque sisters connect overlooked female composers with classical and jazz.
For decades, Katia and Marielle Labèque have charted a path of boundary-pushing piano artistry: they have demonstrated this at DE SINGEL multiple times, from their striking collaboration with Bryce Dessner in 2023 to Philip Glass’s Cocteau Trilogy in 2025. Each time, they reveal an unstoppable curiosity and an ear for the new.
With Wild is the Wind, they do precisely that. Forgotten female composers like Hélène de Montgeroult, Dora Pejačević, and Margaret Bonds sound out alongside Ravel, Bernstein, Mendelssohn, and Nina Simone. Miniatures, jazz, salon music, and contemporary compositions - artists who on paper seem disparate in terms of time, style, and context - take on an effortless coherence in their performance.
The result? A soundscape in which canon and boundaries dissolve. In which time and style are irrelevant. And in which, from time to time, the Labèques truly let rip.
