A Russian pianist and a Japanese pianist meet at the Antwerp Conservatoire and immediately find themselves on the same musical wavelength. Since 2004 they have been combining the classical and Romantic repertoire with Russian and Japanese compositions as a piano duo. For this concert they transport us into the fantasy world of Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov, Durlet and Ravel. Works that have been directly inspired by literary sources. However Kiyotaka Izumi and Polina Chernova tell their musical tale with equal inventiveness and imaginative power in so-called ‘abstract’ works by Mendelssohn and ‘Introduction and Allegro’ by Ravel. The latter work was originally created for harp, flute, clarinet and string quartet, but Ravel adapted it with great success for two pianos.
