'A Belgium-Holland match in a grand orchestral setting' might be the advertisement for this debut concert at deSingel of what has been dubbed 'the best orchestra in the world'. And both conductor and soloist are well-known to us, as are the composers on the programme. Leading you through a fascinating encounter with music from Flanders and The Netherlands is conductor Otto Tausk.
We take the road north with the work by Mayke Nas, scion of a Southern Netherlands musical family. With the Belgian Devreese-Gaillard family of artists, the musical links with The Netherlands date from before the existence of he Concertgebouw. From the time of its foundation, the orchestra has counted various members of the family among its ranks. Frédéric Devreese was born in Amsterdam in 1929. His Fourth Piano Concerto has a particular reputation as the set work for the 1983 Queen Elizabeth Competition, the famous year of prizewinners such as Volondat, Blumenthal, Rodrigues and De Waal. The 'classic' Symphony in D by Tristan Keuris is a 'first' for the RCO and it is high time that the orchestra played a work by our own Luc Brewaeys, simply one of the most fascinating of contemporary European composers. All in all, an exciting 'international' not to be missed!
