This was a high-octane performance from the outset ... Soltani was technically impeccable at full tilt … The Strad
In Berlin she can no longer go to the bakery and supermarket without people speaking to her. Joana Mallwitz was suddenly world news in 2023 when she became the first female chief conductor of a Berlin orchestra. A few months earlier, she signed an exclusive contract with the record label Deutsche Grammophon. She is visiting Belgium with her Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Cellist Kian Soltani, born to a Persian family of musicians, provides double Tchaikovsky pleasure. After the imaginative Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra, he presents a stunning Nocturne. Tchaikovsky took it from his Piano CycleOpus 19 and orchestrated it himself. For Joana Mallwitz, it all began with Franz Schubert. As a child, she became so captivated by his Unfinished Symphony that her parents gave her a pocket score. Mallwitz’s love for Schubert is still unconditional, also in his ‘Great’ Symphony.
