In the ‘St John Passion’, the passion is subjected to an extremely suspenseful interpretation. The scenes follow on from one another almost breathlessly, borne by captivating recitatives and dramatic arias. The deceptively changeable choral pieces lay bare the elusiveness of our hearts. Bach explores the boundaries of what it means to be human. He deploys all the resources that were at Western music’s disposal in 1724, thus transcending the narrow Lutheran context in a story of treachery, torment and existential loneliness. Philippe Herreweghe has already covered thousands of kilometres in the company of this tragedy. But each new performance is a fresh voyage of discovery into what Robert Schumann described as Bach’s most profound and consummate work. Happy Easter!
