In this programme Collegium Vocale will be performing cantatas by Bach alongside works by his last teacher, Dietrich Buxtehude. His large-scale cantata 'Nimm van uns, Heer' is one of the climaxes of his vocal work. It is a passionate plea for redemption and deliverance from all guilt, in the form of an ingeniously constructed choral cantata based on a melody from the well-known Lutheran chorale 'Vater unser in Himmelreich'. In this piece Buxtehude employed every possible musical means to express the emotions in as lively a way as possible - an important lesson for Bach, whose setting of the same chorale can also be heard in this concert.
The concert also includes Bach's cantata 'Schauet dich und sehet', which goes back to the prophecy of Jeremiah. In this piece Bach opens all the dramatic registers, as for example in the bass aria with its obbligato trumpet part, which displays many similarities to Handel's renowned aria 'The trumpet shall sound' in 'The Messiah'.
