The fact that Marc-Antoine Charpentier – who during his lifetime was overshadowed by Lully – is now regarded as one of the central figures in French Baroque music is partially thanks to Hervé Niquet. He delights us with a programme built around the beautiful ‘Te Deum’. Charpentier’s most famous work couples poetic grandeur with virtuoso mastery and attention to detail. The religious motets once again sparkle with theatrical devotion. Constantly fresh combinations of instruments and voices create a rich, sensual world of sound; and yet at the same time we experience almost unrelenting transcendence. In this repertoire, Le Concert Spirituel has no equal. No one manages to maintain the delicate balance between intimacy and orchestral fireworks like they do. The result is hypnotically beautiful.
