Koor & Orkest Collegium Vocale Gent olv. Philippe Herreweghe
Johannes Passion
Anyone who has experienced a ‘St John Passion’ with Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Ghent knows how moving it is. The playing is taut, the articulation precise, the rhythms compelling. The singers and musicians bring the drama to life, giving it a real edge. This results in searching and concentrated religious theatre, always well-balanced and with all the room for serenity and reflection that it needs.
The ‘St John Passion’ is bold and masterly, stirring and insistent. But this work has no firm outlines. There are at least four different versions. The one constant is the very direct drama. Bach transports us into his own world from the very first notes. The music is always accessible and clearly constructed, though at the same time it mercilessly confronts us with the facts. We have to join the composer in reflecting on suffering and pain. The chorales, which give the passion its pattern, offer a brief respite from the harrowing and often graphic musical portrayal of Christ’s agony and crucifixion. With their warm, four-part harmony they provide the element of consolation in the ensemble.
No one will want to miss this concert. You had better book your tickets immediately, before it’s – again – too late.
