Philippe Herreweghe has for some time now taken a new approach to the presentation of Bach's religious vocal music. Central to the presentation format are four solo singers, who not only sing the arias, but also the choral parts, supplemented by two singers per voice. In combination with a strikingly sparse baroque orchestra, this results not only in additional transparency but also in a more direct and expressive approach. Herreweghe concentrates more than ever on an emotional, deeply human layer of meaning, which is interwoven with the notes of Bach's music. Judging from his most recent CD recordings, it seems as if Herreweghe has begun a second 'Bach youth'. During the concert, he tries out his new insights on the very best of Bach's music, the Matthew Passion. This masterpiece will undoubtedly sound stunning and greatly updated.
