Gregorio Allegri’s ‘Miserere’ enjoys near-mythical status. Allegri composed this simple harmonisation of Psalm 51 especially for the choir in the Sistine Chapel, where he was working during the first half of the 17th century.
In principle, only this choir was allowed to perform the work, but ‘illegal’ copies ensured its rapid dissemination from the 18th century onwards. Vincent Dumestre and Le Poème Harmonique approach this score through all the metamorphoses that it has undergone since the copy that Mozart noted down from memory after hearing the work in Rome.
Monteverdi’s madrigals also underwent multiple metamorphoses, with new texts that gave greater emphasis to the lamentations and the jubilation. Allow yourself to be transported by Le Poème Harmonique’s passion for this fantastic music.
