What links Bach, Graupner and Telemann? The answer is Leipzig. At the age of twenty, Telemann's mother insisted that he go there to study law. But it was music that naturally coursed through his blood and he soon wrote his early cantatas for the Thomas Church. Apparently, his talent was quickly noticed because he was soon appointed artistic director of the Leipzig Opera.
Telemann finally ended up in Hamburg, where he would go on to define the course of the city's musical life for more than forty years. He was reluctant to take over the position of cantor at the Thomas Church when he was asked. So he tried to avoid it by recommending Christoph Graupner for the position, but his employer was not happy to see his talented employee leave his post. In the end, Bach took up the post, and the rest is history.
In this concert, L'Arte del Mondo, still a very young ensemble, discovers very interesting links and cross-references between these three composers. The musical director is the baroque veteran Werner Erhardt, who has been the conductor of another leading ensemble, Concerto Köln. The tenor Christoph Prégardien, the unsurpassed master of German song and oratorio, will sing the solo cantatas.
