Why is Johann Sebastian Bach one of the very greatest composers? Because of the universal nature of his music. He masterfully blended the unique characteristics of the great European musical traditions and in particular the Italian masterpieces of Vivaldi and Pergolesi made a great impression on him. This even went so far as to make his own arrangement of Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat Mater’ in his motet ‘Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden’. Bach also admired and studied Vivaldi’s Italian concerti. As a devout priest, he penned authentic and sincere religious works such as his ‘Nisi Dominus’, a sacred cantata that culminates in an intense, introspective drama. The voices of Céline Scheen and Damien Guillon make this artistic fusion between Italy and Germany into a heavenly banquet.✎ 2 Oct 2020 / 5 pm
