Le Concert Lorrain & Balthasar Neumann Chor olv. Christoph Prégardien
Matthäus Passion
A key work by Johann Sebastian Bach. One of the most moving works in the repertoire, in which he captures every aspect of human suffering. The ‘Matthew Passion’. Christoph Prégardien has performed the part of the Evangelist hundreds of times in marvellous and inimitable fashion. The more depth and insight his interpretation gained, the less he was able to reconcile himself to the choices others made for him. In the end he decided to take a giant step and take full responsibility himself.
After the success of his debut as a conductor with the ‘St John Passion’ – at deSingel in 2012 – he and Le Concert Lorrain are now returning with their own ‘Matthew Passion’. In his approach to Bach’s story of the passion he opts fully for dramatic power. He builds up the tension meticulously. He judiciously inserts moments of rest. You shift towards the edge of your seat. And stay there. The outstanding soloists and chorus guarantee that. This is passion as an opera and theatre of emotion. But always coupled with a profound, universal sympathy. We have never been so close to the suffering Christ as we see him in the Matthew Passion, torn by doubt.
