There is no secret about Jan Caeyers' penchant for everything Beethovian. In 2009 this led to this conductor-musicologist writing a well-received biography of the deaf composer. A further creation by Caeyens, his theatre monologue 'Beethoven's immortal beloved', was given its premiere in 2011.
The colossus of Classical music plays a major part in Le Concert Olympique's programming. This concert, for instance, includes his Third Piano Concerto. Beethoven modelled this work on a Mozart piano concerto in the same key; for the finale, he wrote one of the most brilliant rondos in the history of music. Right up Till Fellner's street.
In turn, Schubert in his Sixth Symphony took a leaf out of Beethoven's book: copying the example of the German master, he exchanged the charming three-quarter-time minuet for the capricious scherzo.
Joseph Haydn wrote his London symphony, 'The Miracle', in 1791, the work taking its nickname from an alleged incident at the premiere, when a great chandelier fell from the ceiling and the concert hall was threatened by fire. The fire was quickly put out and the danger averted.
