At deSingel, Jan Caeyers and colleagues are preparing an international tour together with the superb violinist Viktoria Mullova. They will naturally also be playing a concert at their home base, and what a concert!
Brahms wrote his Violin Concerto together with the then violin virtuoso Joachim. The exuberant final section is Brahms' most virtuoso exercise in the Hungarian style. A musical steamroller with featherlight but stunning leaps. In Brahms' day, the only violinist who could cope with this was Joachim, whereas nowadays many violinists compete to offer the best performance. And that includes the superstar Viktoria Mullova.
Beethoven's Seventh Symphony is a masterpiece of composition. A melody that develops through the endless repetition of one single note, as in the second movement, is an obsession in sound. And then there is the final movement: pure nineteenth-century rock music.
