When the world-famous Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes performs a piece, it is as though he is composing it afresh. In the great classics, he lays bare hitherto hidden dimensions. Now he causes a fresh breeze to blow through the repertoire of Mozart. Upon his return to Vienna in autumn 1783, not only did Mozart stage grand operas, but he also emerged as an ingenious and shrewd dramaturge in chamber music. In Mozart’s Piano Quartets and Piano Trios, every instrument is assigned a role. This is music full of amorous duets, intrigues and passionate disputes. It is just as well that this is a concert performance; otherwise Leif Ove Andsnes and the brilliant musicians of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra would have faced some fifty costume changes!
