At the age of 18 the Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos won the 1985 Sibelius competition in Helsinki. Three years later he won first prize in the Paganini competition. Since then he has conquered the whole world, but has always managed to stay true to himself, with discretion and integrity. Alongside his busy solo career, he manages to find the time to play chamber music with a hand-picked selection of colleague friends. All first class musicians playing a delightful repertory with a hint of the gypsy. Haydn's famous 'Gypsy Trio' was named after the Rondo section, called 'all' Ongharese'. Haydn had become familiar with Hungarian gypsy music during his many years' stay in Esterháza at the Hungarian border. Brahms also came under the influence of the gypsy style, which is borne out in his 'Hungarian Dances'. He also worked gypsy melodies into the final of his Second Piano quartet.
