Ever since the eighties, Les Arts Florissants have been conquering international concert and opera stages with their expressive, dramatic performances. Their productions of operas by Lully, Rameau and Handel have been particularly well received. William Christie's ensemble has also proved to be a breeding ground for talent: Marc Minkowski, Christophe Rousset and Hervé Niquet have all learnt the ropes here. Since the turn of the century, Monteverdi's work has also been appearing in their repertoire. First the operas and now the distinguished Seventh Book of Madrigals. Paul Agnew chose it for a logical reason. The book gives the impression of being a collection of separate scenes: briefly glimpsed snapshots of different love stories. All are small mini-operas, rich with seductive singing. In this production, Agnew opts for a theatrical approach. He divides the instruments into two groups and allows the singers to move around the stage. Subtle lighting and theatrical expression combine to give you an optimal experience of this dramatic music. You will see and hear the thirty duos and trios, the dramatic scenes and recitative lieder that together comprise the Seventh Book of Madrigals. A unique opportunity to see one of Monteverdi's key works performed in just one concert.
