Edward Elgar. Anyone who listens attentively will hear the rhythm of Elgar’s own name in the theme of his Enigma Variations. Not affirmatively, but enquiringly. As if the composer were not only painting a portrait of his friends through the fourteen enigmatic variations, but at the same time searching for who he was himself. Kristiina Poska’s artistic journey with the orchestra takes them along the edges of Europe: from England, to the Scandinavian countries. To in the Baltic States. Just like Elgar’s music, the Violin Concerto by the Dane Carl Nielsen is a wonderful halt on this journey. Charged, virtuoso, deeply romantic and dance-like. Soloist Liya Petrova made this concerto her trademark. She won the Nielsen Competition with it in 2016 and made a recording of the concerto with Poska.
Michael Fine’s Suite for Strings also links up with Kristiina’s musical ‘Wanderlust’. A travelogue in notes: agitation prior to departure, wanderings to the north and south, only to finally come back home again.
