The Louisiana Boathouse Ensemble prefers to focus on new and lesser-known music. Although Edward Elgar is the most famous composer on the programme, his Piano Quintet, a sparkling tribute to the glorious nature of his homeland, strangely enough disappeared into the shadows. Erich Korngold’s Suite for Piano Left Hand and Strings is a capricious gem from the wonderful repertoire that he composed exclusively for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein who lost his right arm during the First World War. At once Post-Romantic and premodern, this masterpiece does not fit any predetermined mould. Equally eclectic is ‘Slide Stride’ by the British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. His jazzy tempestuousness and capricious twists are unique in the contemporary composers’ landscape.
