George Enescu's oeuvre is imbued with 'doina': Romanian blues with Turkish overtones. Lucian Ban revamps this music within a New York downtown jazz dimension, reminiscent of the better Ellington and Mingus orchestrations. This is an exceptional jazz octet, including Indian tablas, strings and a jazz combo with wind instruments. Aria, sonata, symphony, orchestral work and a chamber music piece are worked out in the finest instrumental detail by musicians with an irrepressible commitment. All of which is not unimportant in Enescu's complex and rich music: old church modes, glittering chords, melodies with folk strains and a multiplicity of muted colours and Eastern modes. In the same way as Enescu, Ban also employs differentiated sound colours in the style of Schönberg's 'Klangfarbenmelodie'.
'Enescu Re-Imagined' is music of a very high level that displays staggering dramatic power and daring. With no sign of bombast, theatricality or virtuosity, the flower of New York jazz creates the scope necessary for pure symbiosis among the musicians. The concentration they bring to this borders on the extreme, but is guaranteed to result in great satisfaction for both you and them.
