Yuja Wang is a phenomenon. Her virtuosity, artistic expressiveness and stage presence ensure her place at the international forefront as a pianist. Time and time again, she gives incredibly technical and physical performances. But Wang does not engage solo in elite sport. Her fabulous interplay with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra fills the air with magic. The globally celebrated musician feasts on Maurice Ravel ‘with the precision of a Swiss timepiece and full of pure and simple fun ... Just like chocolate’. Wang shines in the Piano Concerto in G. The pianist opens with a crack of the whip that makes the concerto iconic from the first beat. Ravel wrote it shortly after a brief tour of America. He had clearly been listening attentively, because groove and jazzy ritmes à la George Gershwin are interwoven into the third movement. In the wonderful second movement, Ravel recalls his youth in the French Basque country. The grandeur and playfulness of Gershwinian early-20th-century Broadway also resonates in Wang's latest addition to the programme: the Suite for piano and orchestra (Jazz Suite) by Soviet composer-pianist Alexander Tsfasman.
