In a prestigious series of leading international concerts, it is impossible to leave out a large-scale vocal masterpiece. We are therefore presenting ‘The Damnation of Faust’ together with Semperoper Dresden, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and Concertgebouw Amsterdam. It features truly world-famous stars such as Sophie Koch, Paul Groves and Bryn Terfel. Marc Soustrot is our dream conductor in this ambitious project, with Malmö Symphony Orchestra, MDR Rundfunkchor and MDR Knapenkoor Leipzig. Hector Berlioz’ masterpiece is one of the most expressive and imaginative vocal feats of the entire Romantic period. Obsessed with the world of literature, the eccentric Berlioz transforms Goethe’s dramatic tale into a cosmic ‘Légende Dramatique’. Berlioz not only succeeded in using a free form to compose a work which brilliantly interlinked the scenes of the original, but which also incorporated wonderful orchestrations, masterfully magnified emotions and spirited language.
