In 'Totem', two Blindman quartets embark on a programme where the instruments consist mainly of turntables. For this event, artistic leader Eric Sleichim works intensively with the young British composer/turntablist Matthew Wright and the Dutch video film-maker Olga Mink. Wright delves into the presence or absence of the spatial transformation of sound. 'Contact theatre', for example, a work for six record players, employs the use of previously recorded grammophone discs. The deliberate destruction of the discs subjects what is heard to gradual erosion. Sleichim is writing a work for eight turntables for this concert. The musicians performing the work will create a peculiar world where the instrument, mostly found on the club circuit, is introduced into contemporary classical music.
